Social media giant, Twitter, has been making a number of changes to its company, one of which is the appointment of former Nigerian finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, to its board of directors.
Okonjo-Iweala served as the minister of finance and coordinating minister for the economy under President Goodluck Jonathan between 2011 to 2015 when his government was voted. She had previously served as the minister of finance under President Olusegun Obasanjo. She has also worked for various international organisations including the World Bank.
Upon her announcement, Okonjo-Iweala hoped that Twitter will continue to drive important conversations around the world.
“As we strive to build a better world for tomorrow, Twitter can amplify messages and drive critical conversations around today’s most important issues,” she said in a statement.
The move comes at a time when tech companies have been accused of lacking diverse representations in their organisations despite being quite popular with people of colour.
The company has also come under criticism for failing to address the abuse of women on the platform.
