Mzee Jomo Kenyatta – Kenya
On December 12, 1964, Jomo Kenyatta became the first president of Kenya after being imprisoned in 1952, released in 1959, exiled in 1961 voted as prime minister in 1963 and leading the KUMA party to gain independence for the country in 1964 from the British. But before all that action-filled political life which started in 1947, Jomo Kenyatta was a regular young man finding his way through life. After a successful education in the UK and Russia, Jomo returned to Kenya in 1946 to take up a role as a school vice principal and teacher of the Koinange Independent Teachers College. While serving as the school’s vice principal, Kenyatta managed to instil academic discipline in the students and in May 1947, he was made the principal when Koinanage, the then principal of the school travelled to the UK. As principal, he was able to secure funds to expand the school and to encourage more male students to enrol.
