9 African Cities Make Rockefeller’s 100 Resilient Cities Project List

Created by the Rockefeller Foundation, the 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) project is dedicated to helping cities around the world develop the resilience to respond effectively to the physical, social, and economic challenges that have become an accompanying feature of life in the 21st century.

The project kicked off in December 2013 with an initial group of 32 cities, and in 2014, the project received applications from 330 cities in 94 countries for the second phase. Then another 35 cities were added to the project afterward.

The third phase of applications for the “100 Resilient Cities Challenge” closed in November of 2015 and winners were announced in May 2016, with project members and a panel of judges reviewing more than 1,000 applications from prospective cities based on leadership by innovative mayors, a recent catalyst for change, a history of building partnerships, and an ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders.

Nine African cities from eight countries were included in the 100RC challenge by the selection committee. Here, Face2Face Africa takes a look at these nine cities through the development challenges they face as well as the opportunities and potential they have for growth.
