Announcing his retirement through the popular social media platform Instagram, Eto’o wrote:

“I wish to inform you that I hereby put a definitive end to my international career.”

He added:

“On this occasion, I wish to thank all Africans in particular and all my fans around the world for their love and unconditional support.”

The storied 33-year-old joined Everton on Tuesday as a free agent. He is the all-time leading scorer of the Cameroonian national team with 54 goals from 118 caps. Eto’o is also the leading scorer in the African Nations Cup with 18 goals.

Eto’o won the Olympics Gold Medal with national team in 2000. In the same year, he won the African Cup of Nations and successfully defended the title in 2002.

On a personal level at the international stage, Eto’o has been named the African Player of the Year on four occasions: 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2010.
