SANKOFA54: African Empowerment Conference 2014

The Yale Undergraduate Association for African Peace and Development cordially invites students to the third annual Sankofa54: African Youth Empowerment Conference on April 4-5, 2014.

The theme for this year’s conference is “Pan-Africanism in the 21st Century.”

Sankofa54 2014 will explore strategies for us to overcome the dilemmas of divisions and look at how we as individuals, as communities and as nations, can work together to forge partnerships that foster success across the continent and promote peace. We will examine how the social landscape of the nation-state is shifting through changes in population and infrastructure; at the ways in which Africa can invest in Africa; at mechanisms to forge connections across boundaries; at how our leadership influences the trajectory of growth and at how our health challenges require a global, holistic outlook to provide solutions. We will move beyond dissension and conflict in order to renew our commitment to peace, to development and, most importantly, to unity.

Recognizing that solidarity and communal efforts of students on the continent and abroad is a necessary step for the future success of development and peace, Sankofa54 will once again offer students the opportunity to partake in a holistic approach to learning about conflict resolution, peace, and development efforts within Africa and to acquire the necessary tools, network, and mentorship to effect change. It will also provide a critical recruiting opportunity for businesses and organizations working in the developing world to recruit top talent.

The conference will feature five discussion panels concerning infrastructure, economic development, telecommunications, governance, and global health as well as a series of breakout sessions regarding regional integration, African art and literature, education and LGBTQ rights.
