Sierra Leone football association launches investigation after two matches ended with 95-0 and 91-1 scorelines

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) announced it has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the outcome of two first division soccer matches that saw over 180 goals being scored.

According to Africanews, Kahunla Rangers thrashed Lumbebu United 95-0 while Gulf FC edged over Koquima Lebanon with a 91-1 score. The winning teams were vying for promotion and were on equal points. So whichever team that gained promotion would have done so on goal difference.

The country’s football association moved to nullify the results because of the scoreline. An investigation was also subsequently launched.

“We cannot let such mediocrity go unpunished. Those responsible will have to appear before an anti-corruption commission and will have to answer for their actions,” Sierra Leone Football Association president Thomas Daddy Brima said.

Last year, the Ghana Football Association similarly launched an investigation into a match-fixing allegation involving a Premier League game between Ashantigold SC and Inter Allies FC. The former won by 7 goals to nil. But the country’s football association determined Ashantigold had compromised the match. Both teams were demoted to the Division Two League in an announcement this year, Ghanaweb reported.

There were also incidents of uninvestigated scorelines in Nigeria’s amateur division some years back. A 2013 match between Plateau United and Akurba FC ended with a 79-0 scoreline. Police Machine FC also scored 67 goals in a game against Babayaro FC.
