Just like music, books have been used as a political tool by authors and leaders worldwide. In most countries, books have been banned for a number of reasons including blasphemous content and for negatively portraying leaders or political parties.
In other cases, books have been banned because they are heavily sexual or they encourage violence or discrimination against certain groups of people. In some cases, the authors have been jailed, tortured or even murdered. Other writers even decided to run away from their home countries to live in exile for their safety.
It is for this reason that from September 23-29, the world celebrated Banned Books Week, an event that celebrates the availability of books that were once banned and authors who suffered because of their craft.
