Dogons indigenous houses – Mali
These fascinating works of art are the homes of the everyday Dogons, an indigenous people of Mali. The Dogons live in the mountainous parts of Mali and moved into these areas when they refused to convert to Islam. In the mountains, they built their houses to protect them from harsh weather conditions. The houses were also built as a self-defence unit. The length of the houses is due to the lack of space on the rocky mountains where they found themselves. The houses are made of mud and rocks. The buildings have painting and sculptures. The larger ones were for the male, and the smaller ones were for the women. Some of the houses were also built to store food.
