Farting in Public – Malawi
In 2011, Malawi introduced a new bill that outlaws breaking wind in public. The Local Courts Bill created such a furore in the country, with questions on how the law would be implemented.
“My goodness. What happens in a public place where a group is gathered. Do they lock up half a minibus?” asked one Malawian at the time of the debate.
Others felt that the law was misplaced considering there were other urgent and vital matters to deal with, including graft.
In part, the Act reads:
Any person who vitiates the atmosphere in any place so as to make it noxious to the public to the health of persons in general dwelling or carrying on business in the neighbourhood or passing along a public way shall be guilty of a misdemeanour.
