The Benefits of Breastfeeding Your Baby

Studies show that breast milk is the best source of nutrients for your newborn. What makes breast milk so much better than formula? During the first six months of a baby’s life, the immune system is significantly underdeveloped. The mother’s breast milk is the best way to transfer natural immunity to the newborn in order to protect him/her from harmful pathogens.

According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS), babies breastfed during the first six months of life have decreased risk of suffering from diarrhea, ear infections, respiratory infections, and necrotizing enterocolitis. Breastfed babies also have a decreased risk of becoming obese and developing type II diabetes in the future. In addition, mothers who breastfeed, enjoy a number of health benefits.

Moms who breastfeed experience decreased post-partum bleeding and depression. They have a reduced risk for developing breast cancer, ovarian cancer and osteoporosis. In addition, the longer a woman breastfeed’s, the less likely she is to receive the uncomfortable monthly visit from Mother Nature known as the menstrual period.

As a new mom, it can be difficult to find a breast-feeding routine that works. Below are a few recommendations from USDHHS Office on Women’s Health:

• Learn the baby’s hunger signs
• Follow the baby’s lead
• Keep the baby close
• Avoid the use of multiple nipples (bottles, pacifiers, etc.)
• Sleep close by
• Know when to wake the baby
