The Carnac Stones and Dolmens of France, the Hunebedden of Netherlands, the Megaliths of Great Britain and the little known mysterious Stone Circles of the Gambia all share a common mystery; what purpose were they erected to serve?
Since scientists started the noble journey to uncover mankind’s ancestral past throughout the world, many are the astonishing discoveries that have been made. Some of these findings have helped shed considerable light on our past and others have only heightened our already insatiable curiosity.
One of such discoveries is the mysterious Wassu Stone Circles in The Gambia. The circle of stones contains about 10 to 25 ‘pillars’ of carefully carved laterite stones given each circle. The number of stones within each circle may vary given location and naturally occurring conditions that may have weathered others away. The stones stand at par with each other and their heights range from about 200cm to 245cm.
The stones occur in various geometric designs and they occupy an area of about 15,000 square miles between the Gambia and Saloum river. Within this considerable stretch of land can be found hundreds of Stone Circles.
As to what they were erected to serve, only the past can know. However, scholars and scientist who have made it their duty to strip the stone circles of their mysteries have forwarded amongst other claims that; the Wassu Stone Circles enclose the burial grounds of ancient Kings and Chiefs who lived in those parts of modern-day Gambia.
Other experts have also submitted that the Wassu Stone Circles and all of the other stone monuments located in various parts of the world were erected by the ancient ones to help them understand the nature and movement of the sky above us. They are also said to have been used as a calendar to help keep track of the days and nights, and to assist the farmers of old become one with the seasons in order to be accurate in determining when to plant and when to harvest.
The explanations surrounding the existence of Stone Circles and other huge stone monuments are varied and numerous but not conclusive. Again, what are the chances that the occurrence of Stone Circles and monuments separated by thousands of miles apart all across the world, bearing striking resemblance to each other in terms of their structure and arrangement on the ground is a mere coincidence?
And where did the idea of Stone Circles as well as the use of megaliths for the purposes they were used for originate from? Did their creators tour the world erecting stone structures where they settled? And by what means were these individual stones weighing about 25 tons the heaviest, quarried and transported to their respective sites?
The ancient ones were indeed people of advanced levels of intellect and practical skill. Thus, as we seek to understand ourselves as a race and the world around us, it is very necessary that we pay attention to the relics of the past, for all we know now are discoveries made possible by our study of the body of knowledge preceding our birth and the breakthroughs of the future to come will be founded upon breakthroughs of the past.
