Pilato
When Pilato started singing about the status of the poor in Zambia a lot of people were not paying attention to him. This changed in 2013 when he produced a song called Bufi, which alluded to then-President Michael Sata as the ‘father of lies’. The government was not impressed and started targeting him and his band.
The harassment peaked in 2018 when he was arrested after the release of the song ‘Koswe Mumpoto‘, which means ‘rat in a pot’.
Pilato was forced to flee the country following threats from President Edgar Lungu’s supporters upon releasing the song in December 2017. Not only did the government take the song off air, it also banned Pilato from singing it.
