These African musicians got into trouble with their governments over their music

Music is life. Its influence goes beyond entertainment as it serves as a tool for empowerment and medium of criticism against social evils, including bad governance. 

Due to its influence, governments in Africa, in particular, have developed some sort of hatred toward musicians who criticize their policies and government.

The most notable is Nigeria’s Fela Kuti, who criticized every Nigerian military government until his death.

In this article, we cast the spotlight on some famous musicians who have made enemies of the government with their music.
