Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter is an international initiative formed on July 13, 2013, by Opal Tometi, Alicia Garza, and Patrice Cullors. BLM was formulated as a result of the acquittal of George Zimmerman; the man responsible for gunning down Trayvon Martin.  BLM has also been an instrumental force in the protests against the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.  Now, the activist group speaks out for victims of racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequality in the United States criminal justice system.

Growing from the hashtag movement and online advocacy, BLM also uses direct non-violent confrontation and has chapters throughout the United States to include California, New York, Illinois, Tennessee, and Washington State. BLM also has international chapters in the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia.

BLM advocates for all blacks regardless of religion, nationality, gender, or sexual orientation.

The “new civil rights movement” as dubbed by some media outlets is now lending its voice to Siwatu –Salama Ra, a 26-year-old mother who is expecting a second child. Salama-Ra was imprisoned for brandishing her weapon at a neighbor who rammed their car into Salama-Ra’s vehicle while her child and mother sat inside.
