This is how Metro Boomin went from college dropout to rap’s most sought-after producer

Metro Boomin is an American record producer who emerged from St. Louis, MO. Born Leland Tyler Wayne, the artist has carved a name for himself in the hip-hop industry as one of the finest producers.

Since emerging in the industry with his Atlanta trap and hip-hop artists in the 2010s, his unique talent has propelled him to the top of the industry.

Boomin’s career kicked off at Atlanta-based HBCU Morehouse College when he was a student. He however first got into music in middle school, playing bass guitar in the school band. At the age of 13, he started making beats and while still in high school, he used social media to network with well-known hip-hop artists.

Some of the earliest artists he worked with include Tay Don and this led to collaborations with such artists as Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman, and Future. As a business management major at Morehouse College, he deepened his contact with Future. He recalled in an interview that while in high school, he sent 15 to 20 beats to Future. Future and his team eventually responded, saying they liked his beats.

Things changed for him when Future dropped the song “Hard” during Metro Boomin’s only semester at Morehouse. The song soon became the favorite of many, creating a collaboration deal between the duo.

“From that point, now that I’m in Atlanta, me and Future are in the studio every day,” Metro Boomin said on the “Full Send Podcast.” “Like, I would spend time every day. From school, I would go to the studio with Future, and that was like my everyday thing.”

He eventually dropped out of school to pursue music full-time and today, he has produced several hit singles, including “Karate Chop” by Future featuring Lil Wayne, “Honest” by Future, “I Won” by Future featuring Kanye West, and “Tuesday” by ILoveMakonnen featuring Drake.

Others include “3500” by Travis Scott featuring Future and 2 Chainz, “Blow a Bag” by Future, “Where Ya At” by Future featuring Drake, and “Jumpman” and “Big Rings” by Drake and Future.

Certainly, his gamble paid off, and his work got the recognition it deserved. His songs got him three Grammy nominations and 16 Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2013, he released his debut mixtape, “19 & Boomin.”

His net worth, reportedly $45 million, also reflects his success in music.

Metro set up his own record label, Boominati Worldwide, which he launched in 2017 in partnership with Universal Music Group and Republic Records. In addition to his record label, he has a home in Bell Canyon, California, and he reportedly paid $4.9 million for it.

Last month, Metro and Future released the We Don’t Trust You album, which is a mix of Metro’s booming beats and the rapper’s traptastic rhymes, a report by XXL said. Metro’s producer tag, “If Young Metro don’t trust you, I’m gon’ shoot you,” which was created by Future inspired the title of the album, the report added.
