Ugandan president throws shade at Miss World Africa for wearing Indian hair

Ugandan beauty queen, Quiin Abenakyo, who was recently crowned Miss World Africa at the 68th edition of the Miss World pageant in China has returned home to a rousing welcome and a presidential criticism from Yoweri Museveni.

The 22-year-old computer science student arrived in Entebbe on Wednesday and first paid a courtesy call on the Ugandan president at the State House where he expressed concern about her hair.

“Abenakyo is indeed a tall, beautiful Musoga girl. My only concern is that she was wearing Indian hair,” Museveni said in a tweet after her visit.

“I have encouraged her to keep her natural, African hair. We must show African beauty in its natural form,” he added.

This criticism after her sterling performance on the global Miss World stage was not taken lightly by fans who thought the president had no right to make such pronouncements during celebrations.

“I wish u know how this young lady troubled to reach China where she represented our country without ur government’s single coin. Why do u always brag on seeds u didnt sow?” says Twitter user Bashir Khamis.

“M7 Sir! From a soldier to a Famer now your an advisor of hair hahaha.. Oh well, your funny yes. Ok now free Ugandans to do their hair as they please,” says another.

“We celebrate victory…. We don’t celebrate process,” replies another Twitter user, while others supported the president: “I wish she had natural hair she would have been no1 in the whole world but congrats abenakyo.”

Others made fun of the whole situation that stoked another decade-old debate on women’s hair and the love for Brazilian, Indian and synthetic weaves among African women.
