Women of color believe they do not need sunscreen because of their dope melanin, however, that is a farce as skin experts say everyone needs sunscreen to protect the skin from the UV rays of the sun. Venus Williams is a stellar tennis player and an ardent advocate of clean natural beauty and has launched a sunscreen line.
With May being skin cancer awareness month, it is only appropriate that Williams has partnered Credo Beauty for her first beauty line collaboration bringing out two “planet-friendly” sunscreen products called EleVen by Venus x Credo which is an extension of her EleVen brand, which comprises of athletic wear.
According to Credo’s website, this “innovative clean, feel-good formulas absorb quickly, dry invisibly and work with all skin tones and skin types.”
Williams said in an interview that her love for skincare materialized at an early age and she has always had a knack for protecting the skin from damage. She also credited her sister Serena Williams for encouraging her to take better care of her skin.
“When I was younger, I was wild and too free, and I took it for granted that I had great skin,” she said. “I was bad for years. Serena really inspired me; we would practice side by side and I’d see her all the time in sunscreen and long sleeves, But that is not the case now. I am covered from head to toe when I am outside: long sleeves, long pants, and sunscreen. I try to protect my skin as much as I can.”
This melanin-friendly sunscreen by Williams is designed to complement the complexion of women of color and to fill the needed gap when it comes to the lack of products like these.
“No matter what skin tone you are, you want your skin to look like your skin, and you don’t want any layers on top,” William said. “This [line] leaves no white cast and, of course, it’s universal for every skin tone and complexion.”
The tennis legend said SPF is part of her daily routine as she spends most of her time outdoors and the sunscreens that are on the market almost always left a white residue on her skin. Hence, the need for a sunscreen that is “versatile, lightweight and blends with all skin tones which really works for everyone!” Williams said on an Instagram Live announcement of the collaboration.
