Serena Williams and her better half, Alexis Ohanian, have been married for over two years and they’re admirably still going strong.
In an interview with Allure, the superstar and arguably the greatest tennis player of all time spoke candidly about her love life and state of mind prior to meeting the Reddit co-founder. According to Williams, she wasn’t even on the lookout for her “Prince Charming” when they crossed paths.
“It just hadn’t happened, and I really didn’t think about it much,” she said. “I was so committed to my job, and to being the best and working the hardest, and I think I still am.”
She then went ahead to shower some praises on her husband for his support and for allowing her to just be herself.
“Not to knock anyone else I was with before, because they were all mostly amazing, but I know now I can be selfish, have a great career, and a great partner, someone that believes in me,” she added.
The highly decorated tennis star, wife, mother and fashion designer was also full of gratitude to Oprah Winfrey for dropping some priceless relationship advice to her. This was before she met Ohanian.
“Oprah said, ‘Never let anyone dim your light.’ That really stuck with me.” she said.
“Alexis doesn’t dim my light. He doesn’t try to dim my light. He puts me in the light, even if I don’t want to be. He pushes me to further points I never thought about. It always was something that I could see in some relationships — my light would be dimmer. Now I feel like I can shine really bright and still do everything that I want to do,” she said about her husband.
The power couple first met in Rome in 2015 at a hotel they were both lodging.
According to Williams in an interview with Vanity Fair, she was seated with her friends at the Cavalieri Hotel pool waiting to get some breakfast when Ohanian sat at a table close to theirs. They tried convincing him to move to another table because they wanted to reserve it for other team members they were expecting to join but he refused.
