2023 Emmy Awards nominations announced: here are the Black nominees

Nominations for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced on Wednesday, and many Black entertainers have earned nods. The Emmy nominations recognize shows on TV that ran from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. Actress Yvette Nicole Brown and TV Academy chair Frank Scherma announced this year’s slate of nominees during a virtual ceremony.

No Black actors were nominated in the lead actor of a comedy category and no Black actresses were announced in the lead actress of a drama category. But Quinta Brunson was nominated for “Best Lead Actress in a Comedy” while fellow stars Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph were in the “Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series” category.

Rihanna is also now a first-time Primetime Emmy nominee in the “Outstanding Variety Special (Live)” category for The Apple Music Super Bowl LVII Halftime Show Starring Rihanna. Lizzo: Live In Concert, Trevor Noah: I Wish You Would and Wanda Sykes: I’m An Entertainer were nominated for “Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded)” while The Daily Show With Trevor Noah received a nod for “Outstanding Talk Show Series.” RuPaul’s Drag Race was also among the nominees for outstanding reality competition.

The 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards will air live at 8 p.m. ET on Fox on September 18. Ahead, check out the list of Black entertainers who received nominations in this year’s acting and hosting categories:
