Ruben Um Nyobé
Ruben Um Nyobé was a Cameroonian anti-colonialist leader and founder of Cameroon’s People Union.
Born in 1913 and referred to as “the forgotten father of Cameroon”, he fiercely fought for the end of French rule in his homeland. He advocated for social programs that would provide Cameroonians with adequate training and life skills to cope with independence. He also personally appealed to the United Nations.
In 1955, he was instrumental in controlling 460 village and community committees and 80,000 members by using blunt political action.
He was assassinated on September 13, 1958, in an Ambush by the French Army. No one was held legally responsible for his death.
