It was reported yesterday that Elbert Williams, a pivotal figure in the NAACP whose death remained a closed case until now was reopened by Haywood County District Attorney, Garry Brown.
Brown, who was in the throes of organizing the registration of black voters was found dead from bullet wounds in the Hatchie River in 1941.
Apparently, word spread that Brown planned to host an NAACP event at his home.
Despite the fact that Thurgood Marshall gathered credible evidence pertaining to the case, no one was ever charged and the Department of Justice abruptly closed the case after requesting a federal grand jury hearing in 1942.
Federal investigators did some digging and realized that some witnesses or perpetrators could possibly still be alive.
Cases like this are prominent within the African-American community. Many key leaders have been murdered without justice being awarded.
