Day 2: 2015 African Cup of Nations Round-Up

Draws from the two Group B games of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) has left all teams with 1 point each, making qualification still possible for all four teams involved.

Cape Verde playing in their second ever tournament hope to inspire their tiny island nation like they did two years ago in South Africa, when they reached the quarter finals in their AFCON debut.

Their intent was made clear as they dominated the earlier exchanges. Fernado Varela had his header hit against the post and Tunisia were lucky not to have conceded a penalty in that effort.

Tunisia had their moments of brilliance also, though, as Yassine Chikhaoui headed against the bar, and while the ball actually entered the net, the officiating referee blew his whistle for an infraction.

Tunisia — feeling the momentum — kept the pressure until they got an opener from a Mohamed Ali Moncer who connected a low cross from Ali Maaloul in the 70th minute.

Cape Verde bravely came back to earn a draw in 77th minute, when Sporting Lisbon’s Heldon converted a spot kick after being fouled by Ben Youssef.

Meanwhile in the earlier game, Zambia and DR Congo got a similar 1-1 draw score line.

Zambia, the 2012 AFCON champion, drew first blood only 62 seconds in to the game through Given Singuluma from the very edge of the box.

DR Congo had to wait till the 66th minute to come on level terms through Crystal Palace winger’s Yannick Bolasie shot from within box.

DR Congo seemed determined to get a win, but their effort proved futile as all the teams at the end of Day 2 earned a single point.
