Award winning filmmaker and activist Spike Lee turns 62 today. Known for his charisma and outspokenness, most of Lee’s movies highlight and tackle the systematic oppression, marginalization, stereotyping and racism African Americans experience.
With over 30 films to his credit, Lee released his first feature film, She’s Gotta Have It, in 1986 which went ahead to gross over $7 million. He followed it up with other projects including Do the Right Thing, Malcolm X, 4 Little Girls, Get on the Bus, Chi-Raq, just to mention a few.
His latest movie, BlacKkKlansman, which was released in 2018 won him his very first competitive Oscar when he took home the Best Adapted Screenplay award.
Some other notable awards to his name include two Peabody Awards, two Emmys and a BAFTA Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Also, he has received an honorary BAFTA, an honorary Oscar, an honorary César as well as a Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize.
