Lupita Nyong’o Shows Off Hair Braiding Skills [VIDEO]

Late last month, Vogue magazine dazzled its readers with the release of its Lupita Nyong’o July cover. Using a creative way to promote it, on Monday, Vogue released a short clip of a side of the award-winning actress that the public doesn’t know: Lupita the hairdresser!

Showing Nyong’o in a hair salon actually braiding hair, Nyong’o speaks about how and why she fell in love with hair braiding.

“I went home for the summer and an Aunt of mine who has a hair salon, I went and asked her to teach me. I learned how to cornrow, box braid, and twist. Now I really enjoy braiding hair for my friends.”

Nyong’o goes on to say that after she returned to the States with her new skills, she thought it would be a great way for her to make money as a side hustle.

But that’s not how it actually played out.

“When I got back to school from learning how to braid hair in Kenya, I also decided it was going to be my side hustle; I was going to make some money braiding people’s hair. So I went to the great trouble of making a poster, but I just didn’t have the heart to charge anyone, so my friends would make appointments with me, and I would spend the whole weekend braiding their hair.”

Since then, Nyong’o has been braiding the hair of her six best friends.

As for what she loves about her hair texture and hair like it, Nyong’o says, “You can do all sorts of interesting, angular shapes with it. Braiding tells a story.”
