Two African actors who should have won the Golden Globes

Two actors of African descent missed out on the Golden Globes which they very much deserve for their sterling performances in the movie industry last year.

Despite being his first nomination at the prestigious awards, British-Ugandan actor and writer Daniel Kaluuya should have won for his Chris Washington role in the American horror movie “Get Out” which premiered in February 2017.

This could have been a big deal for the young actor who made a mark on the big screen barely ten years ago in movies such as Johnny English Reborn, Kick-Ass 2 and Sicario.

The movie, which was also nominated for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category, failed to win the award.

American-Senegalese writer, director, producer, and actress, Issa Rae who was nominated a second year in a row for the 2017 Best Actress in a TV Comedy or Musical for her performance on HBO’s Insecure failed to grab that Golden Globe.

Rae produces, writes, and acts in Insecure, a show starring two millennial Black women as they navigate their way through work, family, friends, and relationships in Los Angeles. The show has received several awards, including AFI Awards and African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) awards. Rae has also won Best Actress nods from BET and Black Reel Awards for Television for her performance in the show.

HBO recently picked up two new show concepts from Rae named Him Or Her which will showcase the topsy-turvy dating life of a bi-sexual African-American man; and Sweet Life that will exhibit the high-class lifestyle of African-American teens in Windsor Hills – a neighborhood dubbed as the ‘Black Beverly Hills.’

Several actors of African origin have been nominated or had won a Golden Globe award over the years. They include Lupita Nyongo’o, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Uzo Aduba, Djimon Hounsou, David Oyelowo and Barkhad Abdi.

A huge win is what we expect as the Africans are flying high in the competitive industry.
