Nthato Motlana
He was a renowned South African physician, businessman, and anti-apartheid activist. During the apartheid regime, Nthato Motlana became a founding member of several political and social groups championing the course of black South Africans. He founded Phaphama Africa Commercial Enterprises, known as the first Black-owned private hospital in the country.
He also founded Sizwe Medical Aid, an aid scheme in the country which acquired many corporations run previously by White South Africans, including The Sowetan – South Africa’s largest Newspaper. His business successes earned him the name ‘Father of BlackEconomic Empowerment.’ Born on February 16, 1925, he died on November 30, 2008.
