5 Ancient African social structures that thrived before colonisers imposed western versions

Depending on where one is coming from, when Ancient African history is mentioned, it is very easy for one’s mind to quickly imagine mud huts with indigenous traditional people or strong warriors and kingdoms with powerful rulers.

While both versions did exist, Western history has somehow clouded the minds of people in believing that Africa was a dark continent with barbaric people before they enlightened it.

In modern times, Africa and the Black race is making tremendous effort to rewrite and retell its proper history. The retelling of the story includes the knowledge of well advanced and complex societies with distinctive social structures that existed throughout the continent.

Ancient Africa boasts of the practice of democracy years before Lincoln and well-established governments that were able to expand and last for many centuries. There were also different social structures that existed on the continent before European invasion and the imposition of the western style of social structures.
