City-State Societies
Through kingdoms and the development of government, city-states began to rise. They were smaller but independent states that gained independence from kingdoms and had their own rulers who used the government structures. The city-states were often started by breakaway royals or merchants who were exiled or left due to issues they had with their original kingdoms. They were very urban and developed rapidly through trade but were unable to last as long as kingdoms due to the absence of strong militaries to protect them.
