Nat Butler

Nat Butler, of Aberdeen, Maryland, was known to help runaways, providing them with a hiding place while they waited to escape North. At the same time, he would pose as a slave catcher and would offer to resell the runaways to their original owners. After speaking to a slave owner, if the reward for returning a slave was high, he would simply return the slave for the money. If the price was low, Butler would buy the slave then resell him to slave dealers down south for a profit. He remained one of the worst kinds of slave owners for his schemes.
