The office of Kenya’s Public Prosecutor has recovered assets valued at $20 million from its investigations into cases of corruption and theft of state property.

Public Prosecutor, Noordin Haji, said the recovered lot represents just 1% of some $2 billion in stolen assets.

The cases under investigation are all high-profile reports of corruption. The BBC reports that in recent years, many civil servants and government officials have been cited in corrupt activities.

Numerous marches have been held in the capital Nairobi in protest of the state of affairs. President Uhuru Kenyatta has often been derided for a perceived lack of action.

Kenya’s Public Prosecutor told the BBC that he is hopeful of securing a high-profile conviction this year.
