Hub of tourism

Africa has some of the world’s best tourist destinations. The continents’ tourism sector is the second fasting growing in the world after the Asia Pacific. In 2018, it was estimated that 67 million tourists visited the continent. In addition, significant investment has been made in the building of world-class hotels, safaris, beach resorts among others to meet the demands of tourists of varied socio-economic backgrounds.

Beyond the fiscal investment in the sector, there have been considerable policy changes by governments to make traveling around the continent relatively easy. Some of the policy changes include the relaxation of visa restrictions, for instance, in Ethiopia and Ghana. Nigeria and Ghana have also undertaken massive investments in the aviation industry through the expansion of airports and the construction of new ones to meet the rising numbers of travelers. Beyond the potential of the continent’s tourism industry, its challenges are many. They include a lack of affordable accommodation, irregular power supply, poor roads, poor maintenance of tourist sites and poor toilet facilities.
