Tubman was an “old woman” during her rescue missions
When you look at various monuments, art and history presentations, Tubman is often portrayed as a “grandmother figure” but these were photos she took late in her life. Actually, Tubman escaped slavery at the age of 27, and during the years rescuing people with the Underground Railroad, she was young. Her advertisement for her return in 1849 described her as “of a chestnut color, fine looking, and about 5 feet high.”
