Ernest Manning Jr is reportedly behind the first black-owned voice messaging app with a large group video chat ability called Yappin.Chat. Prior to starting his voice messaging app, he created WeKinFolk, a social media platform that combines the features of other popular platforms into one place, according to Black Business.

Yappin.Chat has become the staple for next-generation communication connections between family, friends, colleges and corporate America. This is because it has become known for its unique voice messaging mechanisms similar to text messages but with voice and large live user video chat capabilities, Black Business noted.

“Yappin.Chat represents a leap forward in digital communication,” said Manning Jr., according to this press statement. “Our vision was to create a platform that not only facilitates instantaneous voice messaging but also harnesses the power of live group video to bring people together in meaningful ways. Whether it’s catching up with friends, collaborating with colleagues, or engaging with communities, Yappin.Chat offers an unparalleled platform for connection.”

Manning Jr. launched WeKinFolk — which he dubbed the “Black Facebook” — two years ago as a safe place for people of diverse backgrounds to engage, with no privacy issues and no third-party apps.

“I started WeKinFolk during the Covid pandemic and my goal was to provide a place where families could come together during the social-distancing times. As time went on and I started seeing more and more people of color being banned or put in jail because of their specific views on those top platforms, I realized it was time for us to create something we controlled,” Manning Jr. told Femi Magazine.

A 20-year Air Force Veteran, Manning Jr. grew up in the deep south state of Arkansas to an Air Force father and a homemaker mom. He has consulted for the FBI, NASA, and the Department of Homeland Security.

“My 20 years of military service was a great experience that took me to many parts of the globe. One of my jobs while in the military was cyber security and the training that I received gave me the knowledge that I would later utilize to create my very own social media platform,” he said.

His two platforms currently have thousands of active users putting him in the league of respectable social media owners in the world.

“Our mission was clear from the start,” he stated. “To create spaces where users feel valued, engaged, and secure. The incredible growth of both platforms is a testament to our team’s hard work, innovation, and the vibrant communities that have embraced our vision.”

He stressed that both platforms have introduced initiatives aimed at promoting digital literacy, online safety, and support for mental health, reflecting his commitment to responsible social media use.

The retired Air Force Master Sergeant is now planning for the future as his social media platforms continue to gain ground. He wants to expand the platforms’ global reach and introduce new technologies that enhance user interaction and community building.

“This is just the beginning,” he said. “My team and I committed to pushing the boundaries of what social media can be, creating more inclusive, engaging, and meaningful online experiences for everyone.”
