Louise Bennett-Coverley
Louise Bennett-Coverley, also known as Miss Lou, was a Jamaican poet, folklorist, and actress. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1919, Bennett-Coverley was a champion of Jamaican patois and culture. Her poetry and performances celebrated Jamaican identity and helped to break down cultural barriers. Bennett-Coverley’s influence can be seen in the ongoing efforts to promote and preserve Jamaican culture, including the establishment of Jamaican Patois as an official language.
