In Face of U.S. Police Murders of Blacks, #WeWantToGoHome Petition Asks To Return to Africa

In response to the number of African Americans losing their lives to White police officers in the United States, a new Change.org petition started by a Brenda Pearson of Mclean, Va., calls on African governments to “give asylum to African Americans.”

The senseless murders of 18-year-old teen Michael Brown of Ferguson, Mo.; 43-year-old Eric Garner of Staten Island, N.Y.; 22-year-old John Crawford III of Dayton, Ohio; 25-year-old Ezell Ford of Florence, Calif.; 36-year-old Dante Parker of Victorville, Calif.; 37-year-old Tanisha Anderson of Cleveland, Ohio; 28-year-old Akai Gurley of Brooklyn, N.Y.; 12-year-old Tamir Rice of Cleveland; 34-year-old Rumain Brisbon of Phoenix, Ariz.; 36-year-old Jerame Reid of Bridgeton, N.J.; 19-year-old Tony Robinson of Madison, Wisc.; 32-year-old Philip White of Vineland, N.J.; 44-year-old Eric Harris of Tulsa, Okla.; 50-year-old Walter Scott of North Charleston, S.C.; 25-year-old Freddie Gray of Baltimore, Md.; and most recently, and quite possibly 28-year-old Sandra Bland of Chicago, Ill., just between 2014 and 2015 has re-illuminated the often precarious position Blacks find themselves in, in the United States.

The harrowing murders prompted Pearson to start the hashtag #WeWantToGoHome and write the following in her petition:

Dear African Governments:

African Americans – the descendants of Africans stolen from the continent more than 400 years ago – are experiencing what can only be called neoslavery on the land that our ancestors were forced to build. We experience daily, relentless attacks by the police, suffer high rates of incarceration due largely to discriminatory laws and sentencing, not to mention economic, health, and employment disparities for no other reason than being Black in America. One can only turn on the news to see the treatment that we are receiving in the United States, and it is only getting worse.

We are writing to request that any and all African nations consider granting us asylum within your borders.

We understand that Africa is a continent with vast and dynamic cultural tapestries and thus there is no one-size-fits-all place where we can return. We are simply asking that we have the opportunity to return to the birthplace of our ancestors in order to try to rebuild and heal from our trauma. In return, we will bring all of the talents, skill, and richness that we have given to America in order to help make your nations great while still preserving your cultural identities.

We are ready to return home. We hope you will accept us.

At press time, the petition already has 3,787 supporters; 1,213 more signatures are needed to reach Pearson’s goal of 5,000.

Africans dispersed throughout the diaspora have been putting out a clarion call to return back to Africa since the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

One of the most well-known “Back to Africa” champions was the honorable Marcus “Mosiah” Garvey who said in his 1921 “Back to Africa” speech:

Fellow citizens of Africa, I greet you in the name of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League of the World. You may ask, “what organization is that?”
It is for me to inform you that the Universal Negro Improvement Association is an organization that seeks to unite, into one solid body, the four hundred million Negroes in the world.

To link up the 50 million Negroes in the United States of America, with the 20 million Negroes of the West Indies, the 40 million Negroes of South and Central America, with the 280 million Negroes of Africa, for the purpose of bettering our industrial, commercial, educational, social, and political conditions.

As you are aware, the world in which we live today is divided into separate race groups and distinct nationalities. Each race and each nationality is endeavoring to work out its own destiny, to the exclusion of other races and other nationalities. We hear the cry of “England for the Englishman,” of “France for the Frenchman,” of “Germany for the German,” of “Ireland for the Irish,” of “Palestine for the Jew,” of “Japan for the Japanese,” of “China for the Chinese.”

We, of the Universal Negro Improvement Association, are raising the cry of “Africa for the Africans,” those at home and those abroad.
There are 400 million Africans in the world who have Negro blood coursing through their veins, and we believe that the time has come to unite these 400 million people toward the one common purpose of bettering their condition.

The great problem of the Negro for the last 500 years has been that of disunity. No one or no organization ever succeeded in uniting the Negro race.

But within the last four years, the Universal Negro Improvement Association has worked wonders. It is bringing together in one fold four million organized Negroes who are scattered in all parts of the world.

Here in the 48 States of the American Union, all the West Indies islands, and the countries of South and Central America and Africa. These four million people are working to convert the rest of the four hundred million that are all over the world, and it is for this purpose, that we are asking you to join our land and to do the best you can to help us to bring about an emancipated race.

If anything stateworthy is to be done, it must be done through unity, and it is for that reason that the Universal Negro Improvement Association calls upon every Negro in the United States to rally to this standard. We want to unite the Negro race in this country. We want every Negro to work for one common object, that of building a nation of his own on the great continent of Africa.

That all Negroes all over the world are working for the establishment of a government in Africa, means that it will be realized in another few years. We want the moral and financial support of every Negro to make this dream a possibility. Our race, this organization, has established itself in Nigeria, West Africa, and it endeavors to do all possible to develop that Negro country to become a great industrial and commercial commonwealth.

Pioneers have been sent by this organization to Nigeria, and they are now laying the foundations upon which the four hundred million Negroes of the world will build. If you believe that the Negro has a soul, if you believe that the Negro is a man, if you believe the Negro was endowed with the senses commonly given to other men by the Creator, then you must acknowledge that what other men have done, Negroes can do.

We want to build up cities, nations, governments, industries of our own in Africa, so that we will be able to have a chance to rise from the lowest to the highest position in the African Commonwealth.

More recently in 2014, Ghanaian mayor Kwame“Osagyefo Dr” Appiah Boateng or “Kwame Mayor” called for airlifting millions of African Americans, Afro Caribbeans and others in the diaspora back to Africa at the end of America’s Black History Month in 2015.

Kwame Mayor dubbed the program “Operation Black Moses.”

At press time, there are no updates on how that program fared.

Sign the petition here.

  • I am in general support of this petition and I get it's overall purpose and goal. We should never use any European terminology to describe Africans (Africa comes from the word Orphen who was an Black man of Hebrew-Israelite ancestry or Afer in Latin). Africans were not all the same ethnicity or racial oneness not in ancient times or now. The problem thru history is that because many Africans were of brown or dark skin hues we were all lumped as one or the same by Europeans but funny enough their skin hues are very similar but a Frenchmen wants to be distinguished from a Englishmen or a Polishmen, therefore we must be careful with ourselves as well and take care to make distinctions also. Many African Americans are the descendants of the Hebrew-Israelite and because our ancestors were forcibly mixed with Africans from al over African it makes it very diffucult for many to trace their ancestry and bloodline of whom their ancestors came from but in an effort to address this issue one must conduct your own research and find out as much as you can but if not then my suggestion is for most African-Americans to assume they are from the parts of Africa (West) of where most forced migrants came which was Hebrew-Israelite lands during ancient times (Ghana, Angola, even parts of North Africa and Biafra now located in Nigeria, which is trying to gain it's freedom, IPOB.org, RadioBiafra.co) If African-Americans are truly serious and focused in going back to Africa thereby taking all their talents, skills, brain power, inventions, ideas and resources (when African-Americans were fleeing slavery thru the Underground RailRoad to the north of the U.S. and Canada, slave owners were very concerned and published pamphets and starting rumors that Candaians were cannibals and would eat African-Americans because it was so cold there and no food, then be prepared that if we leave in great numbers the U.S. may try a tactic like this but with a 21st century tweak) then I suggest you are thoughtful and careful and willing to work hard to help improve these African countries as many African countries are not yet in a global position of economic and political strength. However, there is one country on the horizan that wants to be very different from other African countires currently in existence and that is BIAFRA. African-Americans have been abused in the U.S. long enough and our combined talents and education acquired and skill sets should be used to build up Africa now but we will have to contend with the currrent African leaders and mind set that exists in Africa now and of which many are Islamic and many African-Ameicans are not so unless you are a Moslem practicing African-American then I suggest you settle in a Christian African country or help Biafra come into existence which is Judeao-Christian of which many Afrianc-Americans are.

  • Africa is too crowded with too little resources to share. You do not have a home in Africa. Not anymore. Except for America Indians, America is populated by Immigrants like yourselves. No one is more American than yourselves. Fight for your rights. Fight American Apartheid on your own. You never assisted us. Otherwise Xenophobia awaits you in Africa.

  • There are about 4 milion Europeans living in South Africa that may wish to trade places with you.

  • Velinda, never said I know, I said MAY. Just the same as not all Africans outside of Africa have a desire to live in Africa. However, there are plenty of white SAns who, if given a choice would opt to leave SA too.

  • shame on the united states of north america. a land of no freedom but murder to the different colour and though!!
