Reggae music has fought to be recognised as a truly global genre. An evolution of sound that took decades, reggae music has grown from an island invention to a worldwide culture.
Unfortunately, this propelling of reggae on to a global phenomenon has almost exclusively been celebrated as a sole-male achievement. To many of us, it is almost unthinkable to be asked of a female reggae artiste.
But the narrative must be challenged since female reggae musicians go back as far as the 1970s. We, therefore, made a list of seven of the world’s best female singers and songwriters of reggae, in no particular order.
Apologies if some of your favourites do not make our list but it goes to show the plethora of female talents.
