A 46-year-old North Carolina woman was fatally mauled by two pit bulls she was dog-sitting at her home. According to WFMY News 2, the fatal July 7 incident happened just two days after Trena Peed’s mother told her to get the Pitbulls out of her house because she had reservations about them.

“Whoever the owner is, they need to come forward because they say they love my daughter. This is not showing love for her right now,” Peed’s mother, Helen Harris, said. “I understand it was not intentional but I just talked to my daughter on Tuesday and I told her you need to get (those) dogs out of your house.”

The two pit bulls Peed was dog-sitting fatally mauled her shortly after she released them in the wee hours of July 7, FOX8 WGHP reported. The animals were in her backyard when the incident occurred. The deceased woman’s son was also sleeping in the home, and he only woke up after the attack.

Neighbors who spoke with the news outlet said they heard Peed screaming for help and also saw the pit bulls mauling her. “It’s dark. All I hear is her yelling and her dogs over there attacking her,” a neighbor said in a 911 call to report the attack.

“It’s terrible. She got mauled to death. That’s terrible,” Peed’s neighbor and longtime friend also said.

Police officers who responded to the scene shot and killed one of the dogs while the surviving one was placed in quarantine. And though authorities hadn’t yet brought any criminal charges the day after the incident, Peed’s daughter told WFMY News 2 that she wants the owner of the dogs to be held accountable.

“That’s your responsibility,” Waynesha Peed said. “Yeah, she was watching them (but) that’s still your responsibility.”

Harris also re-echoed those sentiments. “I’m not trying to cause nobody no heartache or nothing like that but they say the dogs (were) vicious, I don’t know. I wasn’t there, but that’s what the police said they (were) vicious that’s why they shot him,” Harris said, adding that the tragic incident came after two of her teenage sons, as well as her husband, died.

“This is the worst death I ever experienced in my life and I ain’t taking it lightly and I ain’t laying down resting because I believe somebody could’ve helped my baby out there,” Harris said. “Because if it was her she would’ve helped somebody. I believe somebody could’ve helped my child.”

Waynesha has since set up a GoFundMe to help raise funds for her mother’s funeral.
