She is reputed for the important role she played in the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Mary Fair Burks, the English professor turned civil rights activist, may not have been the face of the Montgomery bus boycott, but as a co-founder of the Women’s Political Council of Montgomery, she gave oxygen to sustaining the historic event.

Due to her experience with segregation, she pushed for the boycott to tackle other pertinent issues like integration. Such a figure deserves a worthy highlight. Here are three facts about Mary Burks you didn’t know.
