Former ‘serial cheater’ explains why marrying 5 women helped him quit that habit

Jame Barrett, a Los Angeles-based recording artist, said he was a “serial cheater” while he was involved in monogamous relationships. But he said that habit ultimately ended when he entered a polyamorous relationship.

Per the New York Post, Barrett, who is now married to five women and shares 11 children with them, has since become an advocate for the normalization and legalization of polyamory.

“I was always a cheater in my monogamous relationships,” Barrett, 30, told What’s The Jam. “I’ve always had a desire for variety.” Barrett also said his desire for variety extends beyond his relationships. “I’m like that, not just with my women,” he explained.

Barrett is married to Cameron, 29, Jessica, 31, Reta, 28, Gabby, 30, and Diana, 30. The sextet shares 11 children aged between 12 and 11 months. Cameron is Barrett’s first wife, and they have been together for 13 years while Diana is his fifth partner. They have been together for four years.

“I also felt like I wasn’t being true and honest with myself, so I felt more limited and internally conflicted,” Barrett stated, adding that embracing polyamory has now made him “freer and more at peace.” He also said he has now “grown and matured.”

Barrett said that though polyamory has positively impacted his relationships and parenting, it still comes with its cons. He, however, stated that you still get additional “spousal support.”

“They say the pros are helping with the kids and not as much spousal stress,” he said. “The cons are just that you get jealous, understandably, and that you don’t get as much one-on-one time as you’d like. It’s hard to get along sometimes.”

Barrett also stated that he has long desired to have a lot of kids, and polyamory allows him to “get that quicker” at the moment, per the New York Post. He added that his “desire for variety is satisfied.”

Barrett, however, told What’s The Jam that it’s not always sun and light. “On the other hand, it’s more work to lead five women and 11 kids, and it’s more work to be dependent on them, to be their emotional and financial support,” he explained. “But at the end of the day, I love them all deeply, and it has elevated me as a man.”

Barrett also said that “monogamy isn’t the only way to love.” “We want to normalize and legalize polygamy — not the weird, religious, culty stuff, but like normal adults who just decided that they want this relationship type,” he explained.
