Latoya Burke made more money thanks to her excellent judgment and good fortune. The Chesapeake resident purchased six tickets in the Pick 5 game of the Virginia Lottery, all of which had the same five numbers and were intended for the drawing on June 5.
Each of those tickets was worth $30,000, so when she ended up matching all five winning numbers, her profits added up to $180,000.
Due to her 50/50 wager, she won $30,000 when she matched all five winning numbers in the precise order of the drawing, which was 5-5-5-5-0. The lotto organization noted that the likelihood of matching all five digits in identical order is one in 100,000.
Burke, who bought the tickets at Tinee Giant on Jackson Avenue, told Virginia Lottery, “I checked the numbers, and I was happy.”
Any profit made by the Virginia Lottery stays in Virginia’s public K–12 education system. Chesapeake received more than $27.2 million in Lottery revenue for K–12 education last fiscal year.
Around 10% of Virginia’s entire K–12 school budget was raised by the Lottery in Fiscal Year 2023, totaling over $867 million.
Two months ago, a woman also won a $50,000 Powerball prize using numbers from a fortune cookie. Tierra Barley from Henrico chose to use the numbers she had previously discovered in a fortune cookie and five of them appeared in the drawing on May 8.
