The retail business has been growing in Ghana since the opening of the Accra Mall back in 2008. Since then the Marina Mall has opened and now the West Hills Mall is set to open in Accra in October 2014. The upcoming mall has already secured retail units with Shoprite, Woolworths, Mr. Price and Truworths.
The new West Hills Mall will be 27,0002 of retail space and will be built in Accra near Winneba road. The mall will feature restaurants, shops, movie theater and a health center.
West Hills Mall used a team of experts to study the shopping behavior of Ghanaians and decided on a “…special bay dedicated to taxis, buses and even tro-tro.”
According to Ghana News Agency, “The West Hulls Mall project is a joint venture between Delico Property Developments Limited of Mauritius and Social Security & National Investment Trust (SSNIT), with Delico holding a 60% stake in the project while SSNIT has 40%.”
This will be West Africa’s largest retail shopping center, but will this benefit the people of Ghana? Will there be room made for African business owners in Accra and surrounding areas or mostly be filled with Western retailers?
