LSU football safety Tamarcus Cooley has been called a hero after rescuing a stranger. Cayla Abad blew her tire out after becoming a victim of the treacherous Baton Rouge roads.
“I was able to make it onto the shoulder, but, like I said, it’s a really busy area. There are cars traveling very close to us,” Abad said, according to WAFB.
Thankfully, Abad and her three children, all under six, weren’t left on the sidelines for too long while they were on Burbank between Lee and Bluebonnet.
“A gentleman pulled over and asked if he could help, and that ended up being Tamarcus Cooley,” Abad said.
Abad explained, “He said I was actually on the phone with my mom when I spotted you and I told my mom I had to stop to help because if it were her on the side of the road, that I would want somebody to stop and help her.”
After changing the tire, they took pictures. Abad uploaded them on social media. It has since received thousands of shares and likes.
“His response was, I didn’t expect that. I didn’t do it to go viral. I did it with you guys’ safety in mind which just shows how genuine he is and how sincere he is,” said Abad.
The gentle giant’s kindness is something this family will always remember.
Cooley started nine games for the Wolfpack in 2024 at the nickel position in defensive secondary before transferring from NC State to join the Tigers in January 2025, according to the LSU website.
He played two games for Maryland during the 2023 season. He made 15 appearances at the collegiate level and made 9 starts before joining LSU.
ESPN ranked Cooley as North Carolina’s second-best defensive back at Rolesville High School. He was also selected to compete in the 2022 Carolinas Shrine Bowl.
