Shirley Jackson
Shirley Jackson is a physicist. She bagged a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), thus, becoming the first African-American woman to earn a doctorate in Nuclear Physics at MIT and the second African-American woman in the United States to earn a doctorate in Physics. Shirley’s scientific research and experiments led to developments in telecommunications with the invention of portable fax, touch-tone telephone, solar cells, and fiber optic cables. Her discoveries also brought about the technology behind caller ID and call waiting.
