Africa has become a growing hub for tourism, with its diverse landscapes, rich cultures, and historical landmarks attracting millions of visitors annually. According to the UN Tourism Barometer, Africa welcomed 6% more tourists from January to September 2024 compared to the same period in 2019.

In 2024, several African countries stood out as the continent’s most visited destinations, each offering unique experiences to travelers. With many African governments investing heavily in promoting their tourist attractions, the continent is poised to see continued growth in tourist arrivals in the years ahead.

  1. Morocco

Leading the list, Morocco welcomed an impressive 17.4 million visitors in 2024. Renowned for its vibrant markets, historic cities such as Marrakech and Fez, and breathtaking desert landscapes, Morocco has cemented its position as a global tourist hotspot. The country’s cultural festivals and world-class hospitality make it a favorite among travelers seeking a blend of tradition and modernity.

A recent report by Bloomberg highlighted how Morocco surpassed its North African neighbor, Egypt, to clinch the top spot. With the country set to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, it anticipates another surge in visitors. Also, as a co-host for the FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal in 2030, Morocco projects receiving 26 million tourists—a 50% increase from 2024.

  1. Egypt

Egypt remains a powerhouse for African tourism, attracting 15.7 million visitors in 2024. Known for its historical landmarks, such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the treasures of the Nile, Egypt continues to captivate history enthusiasts. The Red Sea’s coral reefs and luxurious resorts have also played a significant role in maintaining its appeal to international tourists.

South Africa’s diverse attractions—from the iconic Table Mountain to thrilling safaris in Kruger National Park—drew millions of tourists in 2024. Visitors also enjoyed vibrant cities like Cape Town and Johannesburg, rich cultural experiences, and scenic coastline drives along the Garden Route.

  1. Tunisia

Tunisia remains a favorite for its sun-soaked Mediterranean beaches, ancient ruins, and charming medinas. The country’s affordability and proximity to Europe continue to attract tourists, while historical sites like Carthage and the amphitheater in El Djem offer a glimpse into its glorious past.

  1. Tanzania

Known for its unparalleled wildlife experiences, Tanzania attracted nature enthusiasts from around the globe. The Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater offer breathtaking safaris, while Mount Kilimanjaro and the idyllic beaches of Zanzibar provide diverse adventures for all types of travelers.

Kenya’s iconic Maasai Mara, famous for the annual Great Migration, continues to draw wildlife lovers and photographers. In addition to its safaris, Kenya’s cultural heritage and coastal destinations, such as Diani Beach and Mombasa, added to its appeal in 2024.
