Maya Angelou-1961-1964

Loved and celebrated African American writer, poet and activist, Maya Angelou, also believed in the return trip to Africa to reconnect with roots and people.

The writer spent a great time of her life not only visiting Ghana but living in the country. In 1961, Angelou relocated to Ghana from Egypt. During her time in Ghana, the writer and activist taught at the University of Ghana in the School of Music and Drama, wrote for numerous local newspapers including the Ghana Times and also worked with Ghana’s first president to forward his pan-African vision of a united and free continent.

She lived in the country until 1964, when she relocated to the USA to work with Malcolm X. She was honoured with a stamp in Ghana.
