She was appointed to the National Endowment for the Humanities reviewing panel in 1979

In recognition of her contributions, she was appointed to the National Endowment for the Humanities reviewing panel in 1979. She also took a teaching appointment at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore where she taught literature until her retirement in 1986. Mary Fair Burks passed away on July 21, 1991.
