Azory Gwanda
On November 21, 2017, Tanzanian journalist Azory Gwanda came home in the company of two strange men and told his wife that he had to leave town for an assignment and would be back in a few days. He has since not been seen. When news broke of his disappearance, journalists in Tanzania, Africa and the rest of the world called on the government to find out what could have happened to him, but they are yet to get any result.
Gwanda, before his disappearance, was noted for investigating and reporting on a string of murders of officials, and many believe that this could have contributed to his abduction. The hashtags #WhereIsAzory and #BringBackAzory continue to trend on Twitter two years after his disappearance. This is to push officials and security to speed up with their investigations. Tanzanian President John Magufuli, after coming into office in 2015, has been accused by human rights campaigners of clamping down on the media and free speech. Gwanda was a reporter for the Mwananchi and The Citizen newspapers.
