As President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe welcomes his first grandchild, the 92 year-old African leader attracts questions as to why his only daughter, Bona Mugabe, decided to fly out of the country to deliver her child in Asia when indeed she could have done so at any hospital in Zimbabwe. It remains unknown the reason(s) behind the choice of flying out of the country all the way to Singapore to deliver a baby. Political critics say it could be the lack of faith in the African health care system.

The situation with President Mugabe and his family is no news to Africans as most presidents on the continent are seen choosing Western health care over that of their homeland. Many either die in foreign hospitals or rather opt for a medical leave in these Western countries. This feature talks about five such African leaders who have sought medical attention abroad.
