Elmina Castle – Ghana
Also known as St. George of the Mine Castle, Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482. It was initially used as a trading post before becoming one of the most important stopovers during the transatlantic slave trade. The castle was also used by the Dutch and subsequently the British.
