Lei lei by Maryam Mursal
The composer and vocalist star used to sing in nightclubs with her brand of music that featured a mix of blues, soul, Somali and Arabic influences. She worked with Waaberi, a music and dance troupe in Somalia before being banned for two years for criticizing the then-ruling military government. She subsequently moved to neighbouring Djibouti and recorded her solo, The Journey. The 68-year-old musician is currently based in Denmark.
